Environmental work rewarded

On 1 May, seven wildlife conservationists from around the world were recognised for their work at the 2024 Whitley Awards. Organised by the Whitley Fund for Nature, a UK wildlife charity, the scheme rewards community-based conservation projects that help wildlife, landscapes and people. The winner of this year’s gold award was Dr Purnima Devi Barman from India. She has worked with more than 10,000 local women to save the greater adjutant stork in Assam, India. The women, known as “Stork Sisters”, have helped to increase the birds’ numbers from 450 to more than 1,800. Barman plans to use the prize of £100,000 to expand her campaign to include 20,000 women.
