Faith Ringgold 1930 – 2024

The artist, activist and author who worked for inclusion in the art world.

Faith Ringgold became famous for her “story quilts”, which were made from panels of cotton, silk and other materials with a story on them. She also wrote children’s books and was a political activist who campaigned for the art world to take more notice of work by black people and women. Her artworks often deal with social injustice (when people don’t get equal rights). Ringgold was born in New York, US. When she was young she had bad asthma so was often kept home from school, and would pass the time drawing and listening to jazz.
