7 March 1965 The Selma civil rights march begins Sixty years ago, around 600 people began marching from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in the US, to call for voting rights for black people in America. The peaceful protesters were attacked by police, which caused anger across the country. Civil rights leader Martin Luther King asked religious leaders to join a new march.
