A new treatment for sickle cell disease has been approved for NHS patients in England. Around 50 patients a year will receive it. Sickle cell disease is the name for a group of health conditions that affect red blood cells. These carry oxygen around the body. People who have sickle cell disease produce unusually shaped red blood cells. These cells don’t live as long as healthy blood cells and sometimes make it difficult for blood to flow around the body. This can cause painful episodes when the blood vessels get blocked, and people are more likely to get infections.
