The beautiful cenotes

Sinkholes can be very beautiful, as in the case of cenotes. As with other types of sinkholes, rainwater reacts with underground rock and dissolves it. The surface then collapses and creates a hole that is permanently filled with water. Most cenotes are in the Yucatán Peninsula, an area of Central America that includes parts of Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. Tourists visit them because they are beautiful – but they’re also important as the Yucatán region’s main natural source of fresh water.
