Rowers race to victory

This month, nearly 3,000 youngsters took part in the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships (NJIRC). Indoor rowing is an activity where a person sits on a machine that has a handle attached to a chain. When the handle is pulled, the person’s seat slides and the chain spins a wheel. The faster it is pulled, the faster the wheel spins. The rowing machine doesn’t move and a computer works out how far you have travelled in virtual terms. The rowing action is like rowing a boat outdoors on water. The NJIRC was first held in London in 2007. This year an event also took place in Leeds, England.
