On 15 February 2003, around one and a half million people gathered and marched through London with a simple message: no to war in Iraq. It was the largest protest in the UK’s history. Weeks later, the UK joined the US in invading Iraq. Why did people protest? To try to stop the US and its allies, including the UK, from invading Iraq. The US president, George W. Bush, claimed that Iraq’s leader, Saddam Hussein, had broken international law by developing weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), which were designed to harm large numbers of people.
