Blossom first appears on pear tree branches as green buds, which then start to burst into bloom at the end of March and into April. The arrival of the white flowers is good news for insects that need food early in the year. Bees in particular love pear blossom – although lots of pear types can self-pollinate if no bees or flies are around. All types of pear tree are part of the Rosaceae family – the same group of plants as roses. They grow in clusters of five to seven flowers and each flower has five petals.
