Basilica found under office block

The remains of many ancient buildings have been discovered beneath London, including an amphitheatre, temples and tombs (see panel). The latest find is an important structure and it was unearthed below an office block in the City, which is the oldest part of London. Researchers say the building is a basilica and was the first one in London. A basilica was a public building where meetings were held and important decisions were made – a lot like a town hall. It was built nearly 2,000 years ago, when the Romans ruled Britain. In front of the basilica, which was about 12 metres tall, would have been the forum – a market square surrounded by shops and offices.
