Nuthatches smash up their food

At this time of year, you may be able to see and hear this little bird bashing away at a nut with its beak. Nuthatches are woodland birds found across England, Wales and southern Scotland. Bigger than a robin but smaller than a blackbird, they have a plump orange tummy. On top, their feathers are a blue-grey colour sweeping down to a short tailand they have a band of black across their eyes which makes them look as if they are wearing a mask. Also called “nut hacks” or “nut jobbers”, they collect acorns and other nuts in autumn and wedge them into cracks in tree bark. At this time of year they retrieve them.
