Biofluorescence versus bioluminescence

“Biofluorescence” only works for organisms if there is a source of light nearby that they can absorb and send out again. However, some creatures can produce their own light – a process called bioluminescence. A chemical reaction inside their bodies produces light. Fireflies do it to attract a mate; jellyfish mainly glow to put off predators.
