21 June 1893 The first Ferris wheel is unveiled At a fair in Chicago, US, the first Ferris wheel was opened. It became a success – one reporter called it an “indescribable sensation”. Engineers had been asked to come up with “something daring and unique” to rival the Eiffel Tower in Paris, which had opened four years earlier. George Ferris suggested a steel wheel that was 80 metres tall and could carry more than 2,000 people. The “Ferris wheel” was created and it is still popular at funfairs around the world.…
