The magic of melas

Melas bring people together to celebrate South Asian music, food and dance.

In the Indian and Pakistani languages of Hindi and Urdu the word “mela” describes people gathering at a fair or festival. Melas have now spread around the world and are a great opportunity for everyone to get together and enjoy delicious food, listen to music and learn more about South Asian cultures. Glasgow Mela in Scotland is a free daytime festival that features music, dance, art and food from lots of different countries. It is described as one of the biggest melas in the UK and last year it attracted around 25,000 people. British Punjabi music star Jaz Dhami performed, and there was traditional and Bollywood dancing.
