Brush-tailed bettong Also called woylies, these marsupials (mammals that raise their young in a pouch) are critically endangered. However, a recent project to reintroduce them to Yorke Peninsula in South Australia has been a success. • LIFESPAN: Four to six years in the wild.• HABITAT: Forests, woodlands and eucalyptus scrublands in south-western Australia.• SIZE: 28 to 45 centimetres long (plus a tail up to 33 centimetres long).• DIET: Fungus, insects, plant bulbs and sap and seeds.• FUN FACT: Bettongs walk on their hind legs, using their front legs to dig.
