Rose chafers shine in the Sun
This beautiful, shiny green and red beetle is common in the UK, especially in the south. Rose chafers are around 20 millimetres long and have a V-shape on their backs where the cases of their wings meet. They are active from May to October and you can see them crawl on flowers in woodland and grassland. Female rose chafers lay eggs underground and, after hatching, the larvae (young insects) continue to live in the soil for many months while eating rotting plant remains. The larvae are yellow-white and are curved. Adult rose chafers eat flowers and nectar (a sugary liquid produced by plants). The insects particularly like to feed on dog roses, which have pink or white flowers.…
