Smoke pollutes US cities

Millions of people living in the US have been affected by thick smoke, which has turned the sky orange. The extreme air pollution and unusual colours are caused by huge wildfires in Canada. What happened? On 7 June, areas across the US were blanketed in smoke that had blown south from Canada. Affected cities included the capital, Washington DC, Philadelphia and New York, where a thick orange haze settled across the city. The smoke polluted the air so badly that it was dangerous to breathe. Weather forecasters said that the air quality was the worst it has been for around 40 years.
