There have been many theories about how the Moon formed but the one that is widely accepted today is the impact theory. The impact theory suggests that the Moon formed when a small planet – about the size of Mars – smashed into Earth. The debris from this collision stayed in orbit around Earth and eventually formed into the Moon. Nasa’s Apollo missions (1963–1972) sent astronauts to the Moon’s surface and brought back more than 300 kilograms of lunar rock. From studying this rock, scientists know that the Earth and the Moon have a linked history because the chemicals within the rocks are very similar.…
