Why was this meeting historic?

The US and North Korea have been enemies since 1950, when North and South Korea went to war. The US supported South Korea and sent soldiers to help it. The war lasted for three years before the two sides stopped fighting. Since the end of the war, the US government has been friends with the South and enemies with the North. Although former US presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter visited North Korea and met its senior politicians – including Kim’s father, Kim Jong-il – they only went when they were no longer in power. This meeting was the first time a US president who is in power has met a North Korean leader. After the talks, Trump said, “We’re prepared to start a new history.”…
