1 June 1831 The north magnetic pole is first located The north magnetic pole, the direction in which compasses point, was first located 193 years ago by British naval officer Sir James Clark Ross. Ross was searching for the Northwest Passage (a sea channel connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in North Canada). The north magnetic pole is not the same as the North Pole (Earth’s northernmost point). It is always moving but now it is in the Arctic ocean, moving about 34 miles north-west per year.…
