PM announces general election

On 22 May, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stood outside 10 Downing Street (the Prime Minister’s home) in London in the pouring rain to announce that a general election will take place on 4 July. What is a general election? A general election is when the public chooses the country’s Members of Parliament (MPs) by a vote. MPs represent the public in the House of Commons – part of Parliament where laws are discussed and decided. In the Commons, MPs can ask questions of the Government. Most MPs represent a political party but some don’t and are called Independents. Each MP represents an area called a constituency. The UK has 650 constituencies. The party that gets the most MPs almost always becomes the Government and the leader of that party…
