There are dark areas on the Sun’s surface known as sunspots and scientists believe that these are caused by a constantly changing magnetic field. The theory is that it stops some of the Sun’s heat from reaching the surface, creating cooler and darker spots. Scientists used to think the magnetic field was generated about 130,000 miles below the Sun’s surface. However, a new study suggests it may only be 20,000 miles below.
