Watching for space weather
Engineers in the UK are going to build a new satellite designed to track space weather. “Space weather” is caused by what happens on the surface of the Sun and it can affect the whole solar system. The satellite, named Vigil, is part of a space weather forecasting mission run by the European Space Agency (ESA). It will be developed by a company called Airbus Defence and Space in Stevenage, England. The launch is set for 2031 and the ESA will use one of its Ariane 6 rockets to take Vigil into space, 93 million miles from Earth. It will be in a different position to other satellites, and this will provide scientists with a new view of the Sun’s behaviour. This will be especially useful for looking at “storms”…
