The day that changed the Second World War
D-Day was a military operation that took place during the Second World War (1939–1945) and it was a very important day in the history of Europe. On that day, 6 June 1944, the Allies (a group of countries including the UK, the US, Canada, France and Australia) landed thousands of soldiers in France. Their job was to beat the German army and liberate Europe (set it free) from Nazi Germany. Why did D-Day happen? In 1940, Nazi Germany had invaded Belgium, the Netherlands and France. The leaders of the UK, the US and the Soviet Union (a country made up of Russia and its nearby neighbours) met to discuss how to beat Nazi Germany. In 1943, they had a plan: to land thousands of soldiers on the beaches of Normandy…
