The cicada effect

The sudden appearance of the cicadas affects other species, but not much is known about how long it takes for things to return to normal. When a group of cicadas known as Brood 10 emerged in 2021, lots of birds switched from eating caterpillars to gobbling cicadas instead. This caused the caterpillar population to rise and increased the damage to trees (caterpillars eat tree leaves). Scientists have also linked the appearance of cicadas to a rise in the population of wild turkeys, which eat them.…
