A special swarm of insects

At the end of April, billions of periodical cicadas (a type of insect) began emerging from the ground in the US. This year is special because two specific groups – known as broods – have made their way to the surface at the same time, causing a high-pitched buzz so loud that some people called the police. This year Brood 19, which emerges every 13 years, and Brood 13, which pops up every 17 years, have appeared at the same time. The last time these broods appeared together was in 1803.
