Democracy sausages win votes

Politics can divide opinions but Australians have found a tasty way to bring people together on election day – by firing up their barbecues and serving sausages. The so-called “democracy sausage” has become an election day tradition in Australia, where voting is compulsory and always takes place on a Saturday. Volunteers arrive at polling stations early, loaded with rolls, sausages and sliced onions. Voters who don’t like sausages can relax – there are cakes available too.
