New trial to control seizures

A medical trial has been launched to help control seizures using an implant in the brain. A seizure is a sudden burst of electrical activity in the brain that can affect how it works. The first person in the UK to take part in the trial was 13-year-old Oran. He has a condition called Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, which he developed when he was three. This is a form of epilepsy (see panel) that is hard to treat. Before Oran began the trial, he had seizures every day. These could be dangerous because they sometimes affected his ability to breathe.
