What is Parliament and how does it work?

When the Government has been chosen, Parliament reopens.

On 4 July, people voted for the political party they want to run the country. Find out what happens next, what Parliament is, who is involved and how decisions will be made. How does Parliament start up again? Before Parliament officially begins, Members of Parliament (MPs) have to make a promise, called an oath, that they will serve the Crown (King Charles). There is also a State Opening of Parliament where the King will make a speech setting out the new Government’s plans. This will take place on 17 July and marks the official opening of Parliament. What is Parliament? Parliament is made up of the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the Crown. The King is not usually present, but he is involved in making new laws.…
