On the morning of 18 July, the first bison to roam free in the UK for thousands of years were released into countryside in Kent, England. As part of a project managed by the Kent Wildlife Trust and the Wildwood Trust, a small herd of bison is now living freely on the Wilder Blean reserve near Canterbury. The project’s aim is that reintroducing these ancient animals will transform the Wilder Blean environment – at the moment a dense, man-made pine forest – back into a natural mixed woodland that can support a rich variety of wildlife.
