WHO announces monkeypox update
Monkeypox has been declared an “emergency of international concern” by the World Health Organisation (WHO), an international health group. Monkeypox is a rare disease that has entered the UK in recent months. The monkeypox virus, which causes the disease, spreads through close contact, such as skin-to-skin or sharing bed sheets. Symptoms include fever, headaches and a rash. These are usually mild and clear up after two to three weeks. The WHO announcement follows the infection spreading to more than 70 countries. So far 16,000 cases and five deaths have been reported across the world. The head of the WHO, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said, “With the tools we have we can bring this outbreak under control.” When The Week Junior went to press there were 2,367 monkeypox infections reported in…
