Global computer glitch

Computer systems around the world were affected by a software update that went wrong on 19 July. Called an outage, or glitch, it affected more than 8.5 million devices and caused disruption at airports, banks, doctors’ surgeries, hospitals, train stations and shops all around the world. The outage affected computers using an operating system called Windows. An operating system controls the behind-the-scenes activities in computers. Microsoft, which owns Windows, uses a company called CrowdStrike to keep it secure. However, CrowdStrike sent the wrong file to billions of Microsoft devices around the world by mistake and this caused system errors and days of chaos.
