Flat periwinkles graze seaweed

These tiny sea snails are found on rocky beaches around most of the UK. They come in various colours, including bright yellow, olive green and brown, often with stripes or chequered patterns. There are two species of flat periwinkle, but it’s hard to tell them apart by looking at them. They are up to 1.5 centimetres in height and are usually found on seaweed on the lower parts of the shore, where the sea washes in at high tide. They like bladder wrack seaweed, which has bubbles of air on its brown fronds. The snails seal themselves into their shell by closing a round “door” called an operculum. Be careful when looking for flat periwinkles and remember to always leave them as you find them.…
