The Colombian black spider monkey and the panther chameleon are among dozens of animals whose live cells and tissue are being preserved as part of a new project. Nature’s Safe, a charitable organisation in the UK, is creating the first living biobank in Europe to save endangered animals and animals that could one day be at risk of extinction. A biobank is a store for biological materials. Nature’s Safe takes samples of animals’ cells and body tissue and stores them in the hope that they can revive a species if it disappears. Tullis Matson, who started Nature’s Safe, said, “the clock is ticking – there are a million species at risk”.
