Should all pets be microchipped?

The law on microchips for pets might soon be changing.

On 28 June, MPs debated two petitions in Parliament that had gathered thousands of signatures online. Both were related to the laws about microchipping pets. With a short, painless procedure, a microchip placed inside an animal can help an owner find their pet if it goes missing. More than nine million dogs in the UK have been microchipped by their owners since the law changed in 2016. After years of campaigning there are now plans to introduce a similar law for cats. Animal welfare and vet charities have encouraged everyone to microchip their pets. However, not everyone does it and in the UK you don’t have to microchip any pets other than dogs.
