30 January 1826 The Menai Suspension Bridge opens Anglesey, the largest island in Wales, is separated from the mainland by the Menai Strait. In Welsh, menai means narrow water. For centuries, crossing the strait had been dangerous but nearly 200 years ago, the world’s first iron suspension bridge opened, linking Anglesey with the mainland. Designed by engineer Thomas Telford, the bridge meant people and livestock (farm animals) had a safe way to cross the strait. The bridge is still in use today.…
