Misleading “green” claims tackled by EU

On 17 January, the European Union (EU) approved a new law to stop companies from claiming their products are environmentally friendly without evidence. The EU is a group of 27 countries that work and trade together. The group will ban a practice known as “greenwashing”. This is when a product carries a label claiming, without any proof, that it will not harm the environment. Greenwashing allows companies to tell customers they are buying something that is good for the environment when it might not be. The new law should mean clearer labelling that explains what terms like “sustainable” and “eco-friendly” actually mean. There will also be tighter controls to check that companies’ claims are true.
