Poet with a hero’s story

Jason Allen-Paisant, a Jamaican poet, has won this year’s T.S. Eliot Prize, an award given to the best new poetry collection in the UK and Ireland. Allen-Paisant received the prize for Self-Portrait as Othello, which imagines a backstory for Othello, a character created by William Shakespeare. Growing up in Jamaica, Allen-Paisant was taught how to read by his grandmother. He has studied in Jamaica, France and the UK and now he teaches at the University of Manchester. His experiences of moving to different countries helped him to write Self-Portrait as Othello. He told the BBC, “I’ve travelled far to get here.”…
