Remembering the Holocaust

Vera Schaufeld was sent to the UK for her safety.

On 27 January, it is Holocaust Memorial Day. This is when people come together to remember the Holocaust, when six million Jewish people were killed by the Nazis, who ruled Germany, during the Second World War (1939–1945). The Nazis also killed millions of others, including people with disabilities. Everyone killed in other genocides (an attempt to destroy part of or all of a particular group of people) is also remembered on this day. Vera Schaufeld, who was born in Czechoslovakia in 1930, is a Holocaust survivor. She grew up in a small town called Klatovy and enjoyed a normal, happy childhood with her family.
