Zakir Hussain had a passion for making music from a young age. He was born in Mumbai, India, in 1951. His father, Alla Rakha, was a famous musician who played the tabla. The tabla is a pair of small hand drums with a long history in different parts of South Asia. Hussain’s father used to whisper tabla rhythms to him as a baby, and then taught him how to play when he was seven years old. Hussain picked it up quickly, and five years later he began touring to perform concerts. In 1972, he met a British guitarist called John McLaughlin.
