UK-first operation on brain tumour

For the first time in the UK, surgeons have removed a brain tumour through a patient’s eye socket. A tumour is a mass of cells that multiply in an abnormal, uncontrollable way. The patient, Ruvimbo Kaviya from Leeds, England, had a tumour in the space underneath her brain and behind her eyes. In the past, surgeons have either been unable to operate on tumours in this area or had to do operations that risked unpleasant effects for the patient afterwards. For the operation, a delicate cut was made at the side of Kaviya’s eyelid. Surgeons then put a long, thin tube with a tiny camera on the end called an endoscope through the gap.
