Grey herons fly off to nest sites

From February, grey herons start heading to communal nesting areas, called heronries. Often in treetops, these can be home to more than 100 nests. The nests can be in use for many years and are often shared with other bird species. Herons’ eggs hatch between March and April. You can spot the adults year-round across most of the UK. Grey herons are tall, with a wingspan of 1.8 metres. They have long, thin legs, a long white neck and a grey back. Their bill and eyes are yellow and they have black feathers above their eyes that hang down their neck. Herons often stand still in rivers, ponds or lakes, waiting to catch a fish.
