5 February 1953 Celebrations as sweet rationing ends In 1940, rationing was introduced so people had a fair share of items that were in limited supply during the Second World War (1939–1945). During the war, the first foods to be rationed were bacon, butter, ham and sugar. Sweets and chocolate were rationed because of the sugar shortage. It wasn’t until 1953 that people could buy as many sweets as they wanted. Toffee apples, nougat and liquorice strips sold well as children rushed to sweet shops.…
