Would you time-travel to the past or the future? The recent past – I’m not going anywhere before the invention of flushing toilets. What’s your favourite London landmark? Big Ben. The clock’s machinery is larger than a car. When the 13-tonne bell strikes, you can feel its song vibrating through your ribcage. What inspired you to write this book? I learned that the French used to measure time with 10 hours a day and I became obsessed with how that worked. What is your favourite fact?
