Stolen treasure sent on loan

The British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London have agreed to loan 32 gold and silver treasures back to Ghana. The British army stole the objects during wars between the British and the Asante empire in Ghana 150 years ago. They are described as “Ghana’s crown jewels”. The museums cannot give the artefacts back permanently because several British laws currently forbid it. The British Museum said the agreement is “a way of working together with countries and communities within the realms of the law”. The objects will be loaned for three years and Ghana can then ask the V&A for another three years.
