In December last year a former British politician said the Parthenon Marbles (also known as the Elgin Marbles) should be returned to Greece. The Marbles are in the collection of the British Museum in London. People have been debating which country should own them for many years. What are the Parthenon Marbles? They are a series of more than 30 stone sculptures that date back 2,500 years. The sculptures were created to decorate the Parthenon, an enormous temple built between 447 and 432BC in Athens, Greece. The sculptures were part of a frieze (a collection of art painted or carved onto a wall). How did they come to England?
