Tackling obstacles… together

When you have to tackle a particularly difficult problem, it often helps to work with a team. It’s not just humans that do this, though – there are plenty of examples in the animal kingdom. In fact, a new study has found that pairs of spider dung beetles have a very inventive way of pushing their food (balls of animal poo) around and over obstacles. Researchers carried out experiments in South Africa in 2019 and 2022. They found that spider dung beetles formed pairs of a male and a female and could roll dung much faster than they could on their own. Male beetles always dragged the dung, grabbing the ball with their front legs and walking backwards. Females pushed the dung, also walking backwards but with their rear legs…
