Water-repellent feathers

When a duck comes back to the surface after being underwater, the water usually rolls off its feathers. This happens because some birds have a preen gland, a part of the body that produces oil. Birds rub their beaks against the gland and then coat their feathers in the oil, making themselves waterproof. Not all birds have a preen gland though, such as owls, pigeons and parrots. They’re not as likely as ducks to go underwater, so they don’t need to be waterproof.…
