Chocolate prices soar due to hot weather

In recent years, the price of cacao beans – which are made into chocolate – has gone up. In fact, it more than doubled between July 2022 and February 2024. Cacao beans, which come from the cacao tree, are the main ingredient in chocolate. This has meant chocolate in supermarkets has got more expensive too. Now, a study has suggested that climate change could have contributed to the price rises. For the study, a research group called Climate Central analysed temperatures in West Africa, where around 70% of the world’s cocoa is produced. The researchers found that temperatures in West Africa over the past decade had regularly been hotter than 32° C.
