The rise of fake scientific papers

Anyone reading a scientific paper would expect it to have been carefully written by experts. Unfortunately this isn’t always true, and scientists are now warning that more and more fake papers are finding their way into journals (collections of research), where they are read by other scientists and members of the public. A recent study revealed that across the world 10,000 papers were removed from scientific journals in 2023 after they were found to contain false research. This was up from around 1,000 in 2013. In some countries, scientists must have research published in a journal to get good jobs. Organisations known as “paper mills” have sprung up, selling bogus (fake) papers.
