Annie Nightingale 1940–2024

The first female DJ on BBC Radio 1 who loved to share new music with fans.

Annie, or Anne, Nightingale was not only the first female DJ on BBC Radio 1, she was also the longest-serving DJ on the station. She was known as the Queen of Breaks, because she loved breakbeat, a drum pattern used in hip hop and dance music. However, she never got stuck in a particular musical style. Instead, Nightingale told a magazine, “I listen to what 13-year-olds listen to because that’s the future.” Nightingale became the first female DJ on BBC Radio 1 in 1970, three years after it launched in the UK. The station was set up for housewives to listen to at home and the first presenters were all men because BBC bosses thought women would like listening to men when their husbands were out at work.
